Instructions

This program is organized into 3 week cycles. As detailed in the chart below, your schedule will change for the 3rd week. In order to achieve maximum results please ensure you follow the instructions in the chart below along with the diet and hydrotherapy information. Most dogs will require more than one 3 week cycle before they are well. On average most dogs will require two or three 3 week cycles to achieve optimum results. Every individual is different, some may require longer treatment, while we have seen some regain health in 3 short weeks. Monitoring your dog’s behavior and symptoms is a good way to gauge improvement, but you will want to have your dog’s blood values tested to make sure they are back to normal before stopping the program.

For maintenance, once your dog is well, you can continue with home prepared meals including Dog Greens, filtered water and regular exercise. Twice a year in the Spring and Fall we recommend cleansing your dog’s Liver and Kidneys to keep everything running smoothly. This is basically the last two weeks of the three week cycle. One week for the Liver followed by one week for the Kidneys.

Dosage Instructions by Weight

Our tincture bottle includes a glass dropper. For your dog’s safety we recommend using a plastic oral syringe (without needle) 5 – 10 ml (cc) to administer the liquid formulae. These are available from your veterinarian or local drug store. You can give both formulae together in the same dose. The drops can be placed in a syringe, then you can draw up some plain unsweetened yogurt, baby food or applesauce, this will help take the edge off the taste of the drops. Yogurt usually works best. If your dog has a good appetite, you can mix the drops with a small snack sized portion of food.

Hepara-Cleanse 1 drop per pound of body weight to be given with Blood Cleansing Tonic. Give 3-4 times daily for two weeks.
Blood Cleansing Tonic 1 drop per pound of body weight to be given with Hepara-Cleanse or Rena-Cleanse. Given 3-4 times daily.
Rena-Cleanse 1 drop per pound of body weight to be given with Blood Cleansing Tonic. Given 3-4 times daily for one week.
Dog Greens ½ teaspoon per 10 pounds body weight 2 times daily. Can be added to meals, mixed with water and offered as a drink or mixed with water and syringe fed.

Natural Diuretics

If your dog is suffering from Ascites (abdominal fluid retention) here are some natural diuretics that should be helpful.

Two great natural diuretics are parsley and watermelon. You can make a tea of the fresh parsley leaf (root is good too if you can find it) then let it cool and give it to him by mouth with a plastic syringe. You can also mix the liquid in with his food. Watermelon can be fed, but if he will not eat it, you can juice it or put it in the blender (skin, and pulp) then strain the juice and give the juice to him as often as you can throughout the day. A good trick is to pour the watermelon juice into ice cube trays and freeze so it won’t go bad. You can just pop the cubes out into a freezer bag and take them out to thaw day by day as you need them. If you can find a watermelon with seeds, you can grind the seeds in a coffee grinder and add some to each meal, the seeds have even more diuretic effect than the meat/juice. But still give the juice!

Parsley Tea

1 handful of fresh parsley leaf to 1 quart (liter) filtered or distilled water. Place in pot and bring to a boil, then let simmer for 5 minutes. Let cool. You can mix the tea in with his food, syringe feed or offer it to him in a water dish, how ever you can get the tea into him, give it to him as often as you can throughout the day. Parsley helps to flush impurities from the system and is an excellent kidney food.

For a small dog try to get a few ounces in per day of either the Parsley tea or Watermelon juice or a mixture of both. For larger dogs you can easily give up to a few cups per day.

Hydrotherapy

Probably the most effective therapy in any natural healing program, hydrotherapy has been used for centuries to cure every type of disease. From the Greek physician Hippocrates, John Floyer in England, Vincenz Priessnitz and Sebastian Kneipp in Germany, Benedict Lust to the famous John Kellogg and O G Carroll right here in North America all used hydrotherapy to cure illness.

Hot water brings blood to the surface of the skin, which is why the skin turns red, it relaxes the body by expanding blood vessels and loosening the muscles. Cold water does the opposite; it contracts the muscles and blood vessels sending the blood on the surface deeper into the body and organs. By alternating hot and cold you increase circulation in the body. Blood carries oxygen and nutrition to every cell and organ in the body, when blood is restricted to any area of the body that area will eventually die. By feeding your dog a proper diet and loading his blood with the right herbs and nutrition, hydrotherapy will ensure your pet will receive everything he needs for his body to heal.

Hydrotherapy directly on the liver area will start improving it’s function almost immediately. It has pulled countless dogs out of liver failure and is also equally effective in treating many different ailments. The first time we started hydrotherapy to treat sick animals we would do the whole body, we later began applying the treatments directly to the sick areas and we noticed miracles. Heart murmurs that still lingered after healing dog’s hearts disappeared. A brutal sinus infection that was bleeding and unstoppable for 6 months disappeared after only three days of hydrotherapy. Dogs that were diagnosed with a ripped cruciate ligament healed in weeks. These are just a sample of the amazing healings we have personally seen, I mention these to illustrate how strong the healing power of hydrotherapy is.

Instructions:

If your dog has longer or thick hair you will need to trim the hair on the abdomen/side where the liver is located. If your dog has short thin hair you may not have to trim it at all. If you are not sure where the Liver is located ask your veterinarian to show you.

Put your dog in the tub, you will need a hand sprayer. Turn the water on warm and apply to Liver area. Get him used to the water, after about a minute turn up the heat to the hottest setting you can handle without burning yourself. Keep this on the area for one minute. Then turn the hot water completely off and spray the cold water for another full minute. Repeat this for a total of 10-15 minutes at least twice a day.

End on warm to relax or cold to invigorate. You will notice when on warm your dog may yawn or even start to dose off and on cold they will perk right up!

If your dog is too weak to stand in the tub for 10-15 minutes or he is too stressed by water a second best option would be to use hot and cold packs. The best are the gel packs you can find at the drug store that you can warm up in the microwave and cool by putting in the fridge or freezer (you will need two packs to do this). The routine is the same but instead you will be placing the hot pack on for 1 minute, then switching to the cold pack for one minute, back and forth for 10-15 minutes.

WARNING: If your dog is in Liver failure start him off with warm water alternating to cool water as not to shock his system. Over the next 3-5 days gradually increase the contrast in temperature with each session until you reach the temperatures described above.

Hi and welcome to Five Leaf Pet Botanicals. My name is Amanda Banting, I am a Herbalist and the founder of Five Leaf Pet Botanicals.

In 2002 one of my seven dogs, Tom (he was 6 years old at the time and my eldest), was diagnosed with heart disease, he was given only 6 - 12 months to live. I was devastated. My dogs are my children, so I could not accept his prognosis. I was already practicing natural healing and was very knowledgeable in the power of herbs as medicine, but my education had focused on treating humans, not canines. I, like many other dog owners, thought dogs were dogs - they were fed kibble, brought for walks, given vaccines here and there and they would live into their teens, hopefully dying in their sleep.

Since all my dogs were still young and relatively healthy up until that point, I never had to think about treating them with herbs and natural healing. Since the Vets had given me no hope for Tom and actually told me flat out “there is no cure for heart disease” I felt I had no choice but to take matters into my own hands...
